“I wanted to become a homeowner for my kids.”

Sylvia set a goal to become a homeowner before she turned 30! It took several years, but she did it! She made sacrifices, repaired her credit, lowered her debt-to-income ratio, and educated herself through by taking our homebuyer education workshop. Sylvia also qualified for a 203K loan to renovate and update her home.

There are lots of advantages to becoming a homeowner.  For this single mom, renting had been a challenge.  “When I was a renter, my monthly payment didn’t benefit me,” she said.  “Sometimes it would take weeks for the landlord to fix something that needed to be repaired, and you can’t paint or change things when you rent.”

Her family supported her in the process and made sacrifices too.  Sylvia’s dad agreed to babysit her son so she could save the money she had been spending on daycare.  “My dad became his teacher, and I saved my daycare money plus earned more by working extra hours. My family believed in me,” she said.

NHS Oklahoma housing counselors walked with her through the homebuying process.
Because the homebuying process can seem overwhelming with lots of unknowns, Sylvia enrolled in NHS Oklahoma’s free homebuyer education workshop.  “The homebuyer education class was very good!  I would recommend it to anyone.  It’s not boring!  The speakers were hands on and answered all my questions.  I learned so much—that’s where I learned about my 203K loan,” she said.

Her kids were her biggest motivation for becoming a homeowner. “I put all my fears behind me. ‘No’ was not an answer for me. When I became a homeowner, it was me taking a step up! I wake up grateful every day,” she said.   “It feels great to own a home.  My kids and I love our new home!”
